This looks like a bug in the EsounD emulation of PulseAudio.
Debian Lenny
Found in version pulseaudio/0.9.10-3
The problem is quite serious: gnome-panel freezes, and either manual
killing of pulseaudio is required from a terminal or a reboot is required:
killing X and logging in again stalls.
Lenny is going to be the next release and it's frozen, so probably if
there is a fix in a later version it needs to be backported by the Debian
maintainer.
I get this problem once a day or so. It appears to be triggered by sound
events, I think launch application is the main trigger for me to see the
problem.
I would gladly provide better debug info if someone tells me how.
(invoked as gdb gnome-panel 3826)
