 If relevant, sink is a "Intel 82801DB-ICH4 with AD1981B" through alsa. The
 protocol error does not occur for code linked against 0.9.12 but connected
 to a 0.9.10 server, or for code linked against 0.9.10 connecting to a
 0.9.10.
