 you can have symlinks on the ntfs drive, just not special permissions. If
 pulseaudio made a symlink to /tmp/pulse-something and changed the
 permissions there, this would resolve the problem

 note that this wasnt an issue with pulseaudio 0.9.10

 pulseuadio should probably exit gracefully instead of hanging (and (at
 least on ubuntu) holding up all of gnome) if something like this goes
 wrong
