Hi!
I'd like to know if there are any news on this issue!? I've recently
updated to Ubuntu Karmic and experiencing the same bug (sound always muted
on startup). There are many others affected too, as you can see if you
take a look at the (already mentioned) Ubuntu bug report:

This bug is now 9 months old and still alive and kicking...
There are 2 workarounds that seem to help in some cases, but each one has
its drawbacks and cannot be considered a bug fix:
1. comment some lines within "/etc/init.d/alsa-utils" (see comment #38
ff). However, this is from Ubuntu Jaunty, not sure if it's still valid
2. disabling PA's "module-device-restore" seems to help (see comment #77)
Note that I am using the latest PA (9.21) from Daniel T. Chen's PPA, as
well as the latest available ALSA driver for Ubuntu (from the same PPA).
