 If I type in terminal or try and run it from the padevchooser the volume
 control screen flashes momentarily then disapeers.

 $pavucontrol
 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

 if you explain to me out to capture a crash report I will be more then
 happy to update the bug with the info.
