Comment (by coling):

 Hmmm, very odd.

The fact that you get the "unable to connect" error means that pulse
client libraries are kicking in, but it just cannot connect. Even if the
deamon does not have access the the audio device it should be able to
 connect at very least.

KDE4 uses Phonon which typically uses Xine (a mistake ifyou ask me as Qt
Phonon support has suffered and it's to Qt's detriment that the Xine
backend is dependant on KDE). For 32-bit phonon applications to work with
the xine backend, you'll need the 32-bit xine libraries, phonon libraries,
kde libraries etc. etc., but for firefox and thus flash player, that wont
 be necessary.

I find it very bizarre that this is in any way blocking your access to the
pulse daemon for 32 bit apps whereas gnome is working OK. It almost seems
like pulse is not actually running (hence the connection refused). You may
have better luck on the mailing list as you'll reach more people that way
who can help as not many people monitor this bug-tracker (not that the
mailing list has massive traffic anyway).

Sorry i can't be more helpful but it's always hard trying to help remotely
