Comment(by coling):

 hal is being replaced by udev (or rather udev is picking up the slack). We
 now have a module-udev-detect. It would be good if you could test with
 that.

 In addition, using hw:0 is back practice. You should use symbolic names
 like front:0 etc. It's possibly a simple matter of alsa cocking up this
 mapping that's causing the failure...
