 I've changed my configuration to include:

 load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3 sink_name=alsa_hdmi
 set-default-sink alsa_hdmi

 and also tried disabling module-hal-detect, but there's no change. It
 still reverts to analogue when reloaded and paplay -d alsa_hdmi still
 results in "Stream errror: No such entity"
