Comment(by volkris):

 Someone in the ubuntu bug reported luck connecting to headphones using
 blueman. Sure enough, that worked.

 Now I right click on the headphones in blueman, disconnect "Input Service"
 and "Headset Service", and connect "A2DP Service." Then everything works
 fine.
