 I tried using the ppa here:
 https://launchpad.net/~ricotz/+archive/unstable

 This upgraded Alsa to 1.0.23, Pulseaudio to 1:0.9.22 and kernel to
 2.6.35-6.7.

 The problem is still the same with these newer versions.
