 It's not in gstreamer. paplay doesn't use gstreamer, so if the problem
 persists with paplay, the problem is somewhere else.

 Since it seems most likely the driver that has broken, I think you should
 file a bug against the kernel in Ubuntu's bug tracker. Before doing that,
 it would be good to get a confirmation for that the bug indeed is in the
 kernel. So, downgrade your kernel and see if the problem with the HDMI
 output disappears. A slightly older kernel seems to be available here:
 http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic
