 For example, open alsamixer and try to adjust the volume/control/slider
 provided by the pulse alsa plugin with the up/down arrow keys.  No go.

 What doesn't work: alsamixer arrow keys, amixer set "exact hardware
 value".

 What does work:  alsamixer numberkeys, amixer percentages.
