Comment:

 Modern Linux systems use ConsoleKit to ensure that only the user active on
 the current console has access to the sound card. When you switch back to
 the original console audio playback should continue. If it doesn't then
 most like some other app has seized the chance and blocked the audio
 device, so that PA cannot resume acccess again.

 Anyway, sounds like a misunderstanding how CK works, or a CK problem.
