 That was Colin's original suggestion.  Maybe a way to optionally squelch
 the network traffic absolutely is still good, but I think even without
 squelching we can make significant improvements.

 Both yours and Colin's proposals sounds like they would make a significant
 dent without having to sacrifice the vumeters.
