Comment:

 What Lennart was trying to explain is that changing the default channelmap
 does not automatically make your 5.1 soundcard work in surround mode, it
 is thus not true that default-channel-map in daemon.conf doesn't work, it
 just controls something different than what you expected.

 You really want to change the profile of the card. This can be done in
 several ways: gnome-volume-control, pavucontrol, pactl or directly in
 /etc/pulse/default.pa. So the solution Lennart was suggesting is not a
 workaround, but one of the ways to configure pulseaudio to do the thing
 you want.

 Please tell if this solves your problem. Otherwise I'll close this ticket
 in a couple of weeks.
