Ok, I have the same issue with the other laptop, a ThinkPad T42 too. So
its not related to the T23 where I originally had the issue.
I do not see how to attach a file, thus I will be posting it inline.

Soundcard is greyed out in systemsettings for phonon xine. And for the
other Phonon backends gstreamer and vlc as well.
alsa-mixer -c2 sees the soundcard. I can change volumes.
