To be honest, I like flat-volumes, so I'm against the change.
And also to be honest, it very much helps to highlight when applications
are doing things wrong. If we set it to no by default, then it just papers
over the cases where applications are misbehaving and no real progress is
made.
App developers should not request 100% volume. They should not request any
volume, but leave it up to he system to deal with this.
We cannot solve problems by hiding from them so I very much support
leaving flat volumes turned on by default and forcing the applications to
fix their code. One of our goals is to fix the linux audio mess and
ensuring that applications behave nicely is one of the steps needed.
Pootling along without ruffling any feathers isn't really a primary
concern.
I hope you agree with that general principle.
