Two additional observations:

1) Whenever manually toggling the gconf key to enable loading of
'module-zeroconf-discover' in the local host's gconf-editor, gconf-editor
crashes.

2) Trying to manually load 'module-zeroconf-discover' on the local host using
'pacmd' produces the following in syslog:
