Maybe the new kernel has enabled some new sample rate that doesn't match the
audio that you're playing, so pulseaudio has to do resampling that it didn't
previously need to do?

Could you attach the output of "pactl list" in both cases (old kernel with low
cpu use, new kernel with high cpu use)?
