you need to use 44100Hz wav file to test the period size 441

your aplay result indicate the your sound card cannot select exactly 10 ms
period time since your driver seem have a constraints which limit the period
size must be multiple of eight


this mean you won't get the default 25ms fragment time 



 the proposed default 5ms seem unlikely to work when your hwptr can remained
unchanged for more than 9ms
