You are using the vesa video driver. It relies on the BIOS and lacks any
integration needed to properly enable HDMI audio on any chipsets. Additionally,
it can stomp on the register values set by the proper KMS driver, without the
KMS driver noticing.

Please remove "nomodeset", uninstall the vesa driver package and test whether
this resolves the bug.
