There is an integration guide for the motherboard available to download at
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/21339/DQ77KB-Product-Documentation-Manuals
in which it does clearly show that there is an "Internal stereo speakers
connector" on the motherboard as well as "Front panel audio connector".
Section 1.8 gives further details of the audio connectors on the motherboard.
Just because there is nothing connected to them for normal operation should
mean they have to have special changes made in order to use them at some point
in the future.

It should be simple for the user to plug in a headset or speakers directly on
the motherboard and be able to select them as a new default if the HDMI
connected monitor is also present. Hence killing the speaker output as a
default way to make sure that HDMI works is not a good solution. Some users of
this same board might reasonably choose to plug speakers in and not have a
monitor with integral speakers. Each of those setups should work and not need
any upstream disabling of the speaker output!

It does look like a more flexible solution than just disabling the speaker
output would be a lot more satisfactory. However disabling the speaker pins is
a temporary solution until a proper fix is implemented.
