After chatting with another user with HSP problems, it seems possible that the
conflict between gdm's and normal user's pulseaudio instances might be the
reason why the HSP profile doesn't get connected.

If you have the problem that the A2DP profile connects but HSP doesn't, I'd
like you to try the following workaround and report the results back (I'm
interested in both success and failure):

1. Copy /etc/pulse/default.pa to /var/lib/gdm3/.config/pulse/default.pa

2. Remove module-bluetooth-discover from /var/lib/gdm3/.config/pulse/default.pa

3. Reboot.

I'm not sure if /var/lib/gdm3 is the home directory of the gdm user on all
distributions. You can check the gdm user's home directory from /etc/passwd.

I recommend using this workaround for all bluetooth problems. It may not always
help, but at least it removes one source of problems.
