I'm running using ALSA drivers.
Intel HDA, STAC92xx codec.

Pulse is unusable on my system without fixing the volume problem.

I've filed some bugs in trac about USB audio on pulse. You said they
were HAL problems, have the HAL developers been nagged appropriately?
