For whatever reason (lots of things changed), this now works fine.

Not using 0.9.11 yet but a snapshot from yesterday before the last batch 
of pre-0.9.11 fixes. Also have a newer kernel and obviously those 
alsa-lib patches etc. (tho those should have been active before too).

Anyway, aplay works now although mplayer (32 bit) refuses to connect for 
some as yet unknown reason - I'll puzzle that one out tho.
