... and a crashing gdb, *sigh*.

It boils down to the same old

alsa-util.c: PCM device plug:front:0 refused our hw parameters: Inappropriate ioctl for device

due to a failure in snd_pcm_hw_params().

Time to instrument alsa-lib, I've had enough of OSS even if my hardware
*is* too old to use glitch-free (no hrtimers on this six-year-old
system)...
