[pulseaudio-discuss] HDMI Sound ridiculously quiet

Hello all,

I am new to this list and am trying to get to the bottom of some sound
issues I've been struggling through for a while now.  I am not new to linux
but confess I am new to and confused by linux sound.  After a great deal of
difficulty, I've managed to get things working, the sound is coming through
over HDMI, but it is very very quiet.  I have been over every knob I can
find in alsamixer, and pavucontrol multiple times.  Everything is at 100%
and the sound sounds like it is at about 5-10%.  I've tried multiple source
files (.mp3's) in multiple players (mplayer, VLC, Rhytmbox) and all exhibit
the problem.

My setup is relatively stock ubuntu karmic koala (9.10).  I should add that
things seemed to be working correctly in 9.04 but - for other reasons I
won't go into - reverting is not really an option for me.

Below, I've given the output of some commands I believe to be pertinent
based on other support requests I've seen on forums and whatnot.

Any help anyone can provide would be hugely appreciated.
