This basically means your user does not have permission to access the
sound system.

I've heard that Debian has "strange" udev rules (because the Debian udev
maintainer insists on using home grown rules rather than the upstream
ones) for applying ACLs to devices properly. Someone mentioned this
earlier on this list.

Check the output of "getfacl /dev/snd/controlC0" to confirm your user is
not in the ACL here. Ultimately this is a Debian problem tho', so
probably best to ask via that channel.
