[pulseaudio-discuss] sound works in console, but not in X, what gives?

eee900a netbook running a recent install of Ubuntu 11. Starts up
to a getty prompt (not gdm/kdm/xdm). I login and from my login
shell I can play sounds with "mplayer -ao pulse".
