Well, I'm not very happy with the complexity that it introduces, but I'm
as happy as I can be without somehow redesigning the whole volume
system. So feel free to commit it. (Reviewing would still be nice, just
as with any other patch - reviewing this one probably isn't fun at all,
though.)
