The only entry in src/modules/.gitignore was the symdef, so I've just
killed the whole file in a modified version of this commit and put it in
my tree.

PS I intend to push my tree tomorrow depending on Tanu's thinking
regarding a patch he wants to change - it's not big deal really for me
to back it out but it'll take me a little while to do it properly
(ultimately I'll just start again but can cherry pick rather than
reapply most of the commits :D)
