Perhaps Richard was referring to pre-module-loopback days (i.e. before
the module was included).
In theory, you can just do "parec | pacat" but it's really not a good
solution as it doesn't deal with clock deviation etc.
But most stable versions of most distros include looback module now I
think. Do you need to support older distros specifically or is this just
a "nice to have" feature?
