Brookline MA, December 17, 2004 - The X.Org Foundation today
announced the first release candidate (RC1) of the upcoming
X11R6.8.2 release for the X Window System, which contains
various updates for the X11R6.8.x release series of X11.

This release candidate is currently labeled "experimental" and
is only made available for testing and evaluation purposes.

* Notes for testers:
- Various drivers, modules and other infrastructure got
significant updates and need to be thoroughly tested by the
  community, including:
  - "radeon" video driver
  - "nv" (nvidia) video driver
  - ATI Rage128 video driver
  - Postscript print driver
  - Mesa (OpenGL) update to release 6.2
  - libXpm security update (CAN-2004-0914)
... and many many other things...

- The full changelog for the X11R6.8.x stable branch can be
  found under
http://cvs.freedesktop.org/xorg/xc/ChangeLog?only_with_tag=XORG-6_8-branch&view=log

- Building on Solaris/SPARC with Sun Workshop/Forte is
currently broken. This issue has been reported in bugzilla
  as https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2096

- Building with gcc 2.96 may not work:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/pipermail/release-wranglers/2004-December/001587.html

- The X11R6.8.2 RC1 source code can be obtained via the following
  way:
  - Anonymous CVS:
  % export CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs at cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xorg
  % cvs -z6 checkout -r XORG-6_8_1_901 xc

  - For people with SSH access to the CVS repository:
  % export CVSROOT=:ext:foobar at cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xorg
  % export CVS_RSH=ssh
  % cvs -z6 checkout -r XORG-6_8_1_901 xc

- Next step is to get the RC2 out as soon as the both known
build failure issues (bug 2096 and the gcc 2.96 problem) have
  been fixed.
