So starting qemu-kvm from the command line and connecting to it is no longer
supported if one wants to use spice?

spicec is the old and deprecated client.

It is now splitted in libraries and client programs. virt-viewer/remote-viewer
is one of them. The last release is v0.5.4
(http://virt-manager.org/download.html), but if you can, please use the version
in git instead.
