You could try doing an sshfs mount in parallel.  That is basically the
approach taken by the X2Go project (www.x2go.org).  In fact, one of our
thoughts is to embed SPICE inside of X2Go if the features we need are
not available when we feel we are ready to use SPICE since X2Go is
really a wrapper solution and we should be able to slot in SPICE in
place of NX - John
