It sounds like it has nothing to do with spice, I can't figure from your description
if grub2 (the ubuntu used boot manager afaik) or the kernel is complaining. Can you
try without qxl and spice, does the error still appear? can you try with qxl but without
spice (just sdl/vnc), does the error still appear?
