One question I forgot: have you tried composite as well? It's too bad you have to replace uxa completely for your implementation. I understand anything else would have required actually undoing some rendering operations or maybe rendering in the server, which as you pointed out is harder to do without better understanding of the server. We really need to make the server more accessible.
