Thanks for the links to the bug reports Pavel.

Meanwhile I put the xrandr commands into a .xprofile file to set the 
correct resolution. This led to an error in the Xorg.log with the EDID data.

I finally solved all this by crafting a 
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf, that sets the correct values.
