FWIW, it would maybe be more elegant to use namespaces for that and an
inline namespace to mark the current version. IIUC it would practically
be the same, just that inline namespaces are meant to be used for ABI
versioning (though not really helping in this case AFAICS).

Not much more input on the ODR from me, seems we'd have to implement
the logic around the versions to pass the correct type if we want to
solve it - do we have to solve it, though?
