I wouldn't mind to change it all for consistency. But a note in

I don't see much point for the if() above. That's just to save
alloc operation but this is not hot path.
Should be fine to replace the if() and memcpy() with
g_free(mon_config);
mon_config = g_memdup(new_monitors, size);
Feel free to do the suggestion above in a separate patch or in
this one as it kinda relate to moving to g_memdup()
