thanks for the pointer.

using get() for a check with 0 (maybe nullptr instead if 0 would be
better suited) seems to be the same as a cast to bool, according to
http://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/memory/shared_ptr/operator_bool.  So
it is actually not that different.

-fPIC is already enforced in the Debian build.
