This is for a contact modified locally (= your computer?) and then sent
to the phone, right?

It's impossible to tell from the information found here why the phone
refused to update the contact. You'll have to look at sync logs on the
phone to determine the reason for the 500 error. Or do trial-and-error
runs where you make some educated guess about which change is causing
the issue and then trying just that in isolation.
