I just had the same freeze-like issue again and noticed something new.
The system wouldn't react to anything, but sound was still running (hard to say
whether it was looping or not). The only thing I could do was to press the
power button, after which I got to see the tty output of systemd shutting down
the machine as if everything was normal. After the next boot however the
journal was empty, no way to figure out what went wrong.

This is even worse than I thought before, systemd still works when this
happens, it shuts down the system but loses the logfile anyway.
