It was removed a long time ago aready... Back in 187 or 188 IIRC
(certainly around that time).

So the question is really whether it should be added back in to allow
this kind of broken-by-design setup (albeit with a lot of "THIS IS A
HORRIBLE HACK" error messages thrown in to annoy people in their log
files as punishment!)?

Personally, I'd be happy to be a little pragmatic here (the code is not
*that* hard to maintain), but I do also prefer the "fix things with the
right design" philosophy generally. Ultimately the decision lies with
Kay, so he's the one you have to convince!
