[systemd-devel] cannot view my own logs?

I'm trying to audit my user logs on my system but journalctl shows
nothing, saying

No journal files were opened due to insufficient permissions.

journald has created these files:

total 587,776
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root                    4 Oct  8 22:13 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root                    3 Oct  8 22:09 ..
-rw-r----- 1 root systemd-journal 3,891,200 Oct  9 00:45 system.journal
-rw-r----- 1 root systemd-journal 3,792,896 Oct  9 00:45
user-501.journal

why isn't it creating the files with the proper permissions?
