So if initrd is deleted or rebuilt for the running kernel, shut down normally
is not possible?

Definitely the disks in the two systems that triggered the thread...

In the latter of the two, I found the cheapie PS has flimsy connectors after
subsequent POST couldn't find the disk. I pinched them all closed on and
reconnected the one for the HD, and its trouble stopped. In the former, there
was some problem with cabling as well, but I already forgot what. :-p
