I thought it possible. I don't understand what dependencies if any Xorg may
have on systemd, and saw an apparent time connection between upgrade to 219
and problem appearance in Tumbleweed.

That's what the links in my OP were about. The bugzilla.redhat.com bug has
generated no response. The mageia-dev mailing list provided no useful
response in both September and February.
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15662 has generated no response as
well. Only place left that makes sense to try is kernel, maybe KMS fault
switching back from 1600x1200 to 1024x768?
