I think i got what you mean, but wouldn't it be better to generate a
little gradient based on the color(s) defined in the actual color
category, pack that gradient into a quare and maybe overlay a 1px inset
half-transparent white square? This would look pretty tangoish and the
buttons would represent exactly the color in the color category.

Of course this only makes sense if "color category" means anything more
than just the "buttons" themselves. I.e. if a "color category"
represents a color that entries in the calendar are displayed in. In
such case a coded solution would be the better choice, imho.
