Ran into this again because of my work on the Thunderbird activity 
manager [1], [2].
I'm leaning more and more towards that the most recognized metaphor for 
sync is a round plate with arrows pointing to each others ends. This is 
what both Vista [3] and OS X [4] use and I'm pretty sure it's used quite 
a lot on a bunch of mobile platforms as well.
It might suck, but then again, we don't have anything better, and it 
would be a pity to wait two more years for a better metaphor to come around.
This is pretty much my approach to the presence icons in g-i-t as well.
