In my current Nicknames spec draft, which I'll attach shortly, the Nickname is
the empty string if the service doesn't tell us anything better, and the *UI*
is responsible for falling back to the identifier if it wants to (in practice
it does). Does that solve your problem?

(I plan to do the same thing for "pet names" in the ContactList interface)
